Office of Design Recognized with a 2024 Excellence in Rehabilitation Award

Office of Design was recently recognized with a 2024 Excellence in Rehabilitation Award from the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation for our work on the Sycamore Chapel and Sycamore Office Building located in Decatur, Georgia.

The Chapel transformed into a versatile event space, preserving original features like plaster, wood floors and stonework. Meanwhile, the Children’s Building was converted to office space, retaining its original layout and mid-century aesthetics. Showcasing proactive stewardship and vision, this project serves as a model for private, nonprofit and community collaboration.

DDRC gives stamp of approval to downtown hotel design

Last week, Office of Design celebrated the groundbreaking of a new AC Hotels going up in Auburn, AL. It will be a six-story hotel complete with a top-floor restaurant, a lounge, and other amenities.

With the DDRC’s approval of the building design, the developer, RAM Hotels, will continue with the development review team process. After the DRT has finished its review, the project will move forward, according to Mark Robbins of RAM Hotels, who added that the construction process could begin in two to three months or just after the first of the year, at the latest, and would take 18 to 24 months to complete.

Tire South Atlanta Receives 2024 AIA Georgia Merit Award

Office of Design is proud to announce that Tire South Atlanta has received a 2024 AIA Georgia Merit Award. The 52nd Annual AIA Georgia Design & Honor Awards celebration was held on April 13th at the rooftop of Ponce City Market in Atlanta, Georgia. The project was awarded in the “Renovation/Restoration/Adaptive-Reuse Under $1M” category and was one of a small number of finalists selected from over 140 total project entries.

Tire South Atlanta is the renovation and expansion of a vacant automotive repair shop on a constrained site, emphasizing efficiency and branding consistency with the client’s other locations while also maximizing visibility from the adjacent highway. From the jury:

This is a very difficult typology to make interesting and architecturally relevant. This project succeeds in doing that.

Barn Lights & Craft Beer Create Perfect Pairing in Atlanta Brewery

Office of Design loved having the opportunity to design a brewpub in the heart of Atlanta’s Edgewood neighborhood. Barn Light Electric Company featured the design in their latest blog post!

The full-scale, gut remodel meant transforming a former automotive garage into a fun and inviting place where patrons enjoy coffee in the morning and craft beer in the afternoon and evening. Working with tall ceilings and exposed piping, block, and ductwork, Morgan looked for lighting that could add warmth to the space. Her online search took her to Barn Light Electric.

Renderings: Abandoned building’s redo in heart of Kirkwood eyes summer debut

18-502 - EXTERIOR RENDER.jpg

Office of Design is excited to share updated renderings of Kirkwood’s latest new business! Evergreen Butcher + Baker will not only offer delicious treats, but will also offer the opportunity to learn how to make them at home. We are looking forward to seeing this project coming to life!

Plans call for mixed-use on a small scale that includes an “old world” neighborhood bakery and butcher—and architecture that embraces what’s old, rather than removing it.

Office of Design Celebrates Recognition for Another Award-winning Design

Office of Design was honored on November 15, 2018 with the recognition of AIA Atlanta jurors at the annual Residential Design Awards. At a ceremony where all forms of residential design were celebrated: Mixed Use/Multi-family design; Single Family Nontraditional design; Single Family Traditional design; and Renovation/adaptive reuse design; Office of Design was one of 2 firms to receive an acclaimed Design Excellence Honor Award for it’s project: The Lakeshore House. The office is delighted to receive this honor. Here are some things the jurors had to say:

This project captured the best an architect can do: bring out the specific beauty of a place in an empathetic and responsible manner.”

”This house is a delight. It is amazingly efficient. The exterior image shows a simple and beautifully proportioned hut, and the interior is playful and compact. The site and program were a challenge. The architect rose to the occasion.

A VIEW FROM THE TOP: RELAX AND UNWIND IN THE BUSTLING CITY OF ATLANTA

Reynolds-Square.jpg

Office of Design project, Reynolds Square, is on the market and selling like hot-cakes! With every home in phase 1 nearly sold out, the combination of accommodations, affordability, and location make this a project we are thrilled to have designed. Office of Design designed this project and another currently under construction, The Chelsea Westside (also mentioned in this article), for Icon Development.

As the urban landscape continues to expand, backyards are becoming smaller to non-existent. Of course, most homeowners are perfectly happy to trade weekend yard work for a great view. Icon Residential has gone above and beyond (literally) to bring their homeowners a spacious, private rooftop overlooking the exquisite views of historic Atlanta. Having the option to take advantage of a fantastic view from a high vantage point is the ticket to a quiet, soothing relaxation area – even in the bustling city!

Office of Design is excited to see the start of another one of it's town home projects, 'Plateau West', break ground near Atlantic Station. These Loring Heights town homes will boast gorgeous views of downtown Atlanta and sleek, modern design moves. Stay tuned to see how these beauties progress!

The project is one of at least three townhome ventures brewing within a few blocks, per the grapevine, but Monte Hewett’s director of marketing, Dina Gundersen, says Plateau West’s “unique, sleek, and modern [design] sets it apart” from other semidetached communities in the area.

“The rooftop decks are fantastic gathering spaces with arbors, outdoor grills, and fireplaces, and have great views of downtown,” Gundersen wrote in an email to Curbed Atlanta. “Each townhome has multiple decks, and one plan design has dual master suites.”

A unique Memorial Drive condo offering at the edge of Cabbagetown could soon move toward construction, as half of the units have been claimed.

William Headshot.JPG

Office of Design is beyond proud of its newest employee's recent accomplishment of being named a 2017 Portz Scholar for his senior thesis project titled “On Craft.” Congratulations, William! We are excited to have you on our team.

In “On Craft,” Lentjes promotes looking beyond “endless mechanized production and spiritless materialism” and viewing architecture “through the consciousness, awareness and perception of a subject.” He describes “craft” as a relationship between craftsman, tool and material.
